Strawbery Banke Book Offers 400-Year History of Obama Campaign Site in Portsmouth NH Print Email

For those who first heard about Strawbery Banke following a visit by President Barack Obama, there’s a lot more to learn. The 10-acre museum is known as “America’s oldest neighborhood” and was settled in 1630 on the bank of the New Hampshire side of the PiscataquaRiver. The settlement “accidentally named Strawberry Banke” was renamed Portsmouth, NH in 1652. It is directly across the river from Kittery, Maine, home of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. A nearby fishing settlement in nearby Rye was established in 1623, just three years after those so-called “Pilgrims” landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts. (Continued below)

 
HMS Bounty Stops by Star Island Print Email

On the afternoon of August 28, 2012 the HMS Bounty, famous for its appearance in the film the Mutiny on the Bounty sailed into Gosport Harbor and docked at the Star Island pier. Guests were allowed onboard the boat, a large-sized replica used in the 1962 Marlon Brando film, while the boat’s crew was able to test their sea legs on firm ground between mainland stops. The Bounty then anchored off of Appledore Island to allow for the M/V Thomas Laighton to ferry guests to Star Island during their normally scheduled Wednesday visits, the Bounty planned to dock at Star Island again in the evening for this historic visit.  (Continued below)

 
Gundalow Company Seeks Volunteer Educators Print Email

The Gundalow Company is recruiting volunteer educators to share their love of learning and experience lovely mornings on the shores of Great Bay. Volunteer educators are needed week-day mornings this fall to work with elementary school students onboard the gundalow during the Great Bay Discovery Center's Cultural History Programs.  The Captain Edward H. Adams, a replica of the sailing barges that once carried cargo throughout our tidal region, will be docked at Sandy Point in Greenland, NH for seven weeks beginning September 10. The school field trip includes a visit to the landing and a dockside program of engaging hands-on activities.  (Continued below)

The August “World’s Best Awards” issue of Travel and Leisure magazine is reaching newsstands now with the news that readers have named Wentworth By the Sea Hotel and Spa one of the top 50 resorts in the continental United States. The re-invented Wentworth scored 90.93 points to rank 19 out of the 50, with such illustrious properties as The Greenbrier, Pinehurst Resort, Auberge du Soleil, the White Elephant and The Broadmoor rating lower scores. The poll was conducted between December 2011 and March 2012. Readers rate their choices on a scale from 1 to 5 in the categories of rooms/ facilities, location, service, restaurants/food and value. The Top 50 Resort scores ranged from 94.75 to 89.46 overall. (Continued below)
