Volunteer Boat Builders Help Shape New Gundalow Print Email

PORTSMOUTH, NH -- When construction started on the new gundalow this past May (2011) at Puddle Dock on the grounds of Strawbery Banke Museum, a team of professional boat builders was hired to put the new wooden boat together under the direction of master shipwright Paul Rollins. Every day they are accompanied by experienced and novice volunteers of all ages. Volunteers spin cotton and oakum, staini the planks, sand, seal bolt holes, and manufacture the trunnels (wooden tree-nails that peg much of the boat together). The are a critical part of the team. NY Film Crew Seeks NH Lost River Print Email

WOODSTOCK, NH - The caves and caverns of Lost River Gorge will provide the backdrop later this week for a New York-based production company filming on location in Kinsman Notch. A crew of about 20 people from Amalgamated Picture Company will be at Lost River for most of the day on Friday October 15, 2011, said general manager Deb Williams, shooting scenes for the comedic drama, “Epilogue,” about the break-up of an action hero and his leading lady at the end of their adventure. Realtors Pledge $100 per Commission to African Burying Ground Memorial Print Email

The businesses of greater Portsmouth continue to step forward in support of the AfricanBuryingGroundMemorial Park envisioned for the Chestnut Street site where 18th century African remains were rediscovered in October 2003. Starting October 7, 2011, the anniversary of that rediscovery, several local realtors will begin donating $100 from each of their sales commissions to the African Burying Ground Trust Fund that supports the creation of the AfricanBuryingGroundMemorial Park. The donations are being pledged for a year through October 7, 2012. (Continued below)

 
South Berwick Girl Donates Clay Pipe to Museum Print Email

South Berwick,Maine– Sarah Arenberg, 10, was swimming off the Rollinsford boat ramp in the SalmonFalls River this summer, when she saw something white glint on the muddy bottom.

“I thought at first that it was a shark’s tooth,” said the Marshwood Great Works School fifth grader who lives in South Berwick. To local historians, Sarah’s find was no less interesting. It is, after all, a clay pipe that someone may have smoked near that spot over 125 years ago. (Continued below)

 
Peace and Labor Parade Seeks Marchers Print Email

September 25, 2011, Portsmouth will remember two grand city traditions. The parade will be salute to Labor, particularly the workers of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard who form a critical part of the Seacoast economy. It will also honor the month the 1905  Portsmouth Peace Treaty with a public was signed. (Continued below)
