Generous Gift Brings Famous Kittery Woodcarver to Life Print Email

The amazing work of Kittery Point woodcarver John Haley Bellamy will come to life at Discover Portsmouth in 2014. The Portsmouth Historical Society has received a $55,000 grant from Mr. and Mrs. Pete Nicholas to support a new book and exhibit on Bellamy, who is famous for his iconic and highly collectible carvings of American eagles. (Click headlinef or full article)

 
Patrons Sought for USS Thresher Book Print Email

Silent Strength, the hardcover edition of D. Allan Kerr’s Portsmouth Herald articles profiling some of the remarkable men lost aboard the USS Thresher, is being published this April by Peter E. Randall Publisher in Portsmouth. Those interested in purchasing the book (with the working subtitle can pre-order copies thru the Thresher Memorial Project Group at a discount. The book will sell for $29.99 upon publication, but those who pre-order can purchase a copy for $24.99. 

 
Hike Through History in South Berwick Print Email

Some students go to a far-away museum to learn history.  But the students here in Maine just hike out the door of their school, and follow their imagination to discoveries in their own home town.  Located in the heart of an historic village, South Berwick Central School is steps away from historic sites in all directions. African Burying Ground Receives Grant Print Email

National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) acting chairman Joan Shigekawa announced today that the African Burying Ground Memorial Park is one of 817 nonprofit organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. Following a successful round of grant applications, the African Burying Ground Memorial Park is approved to receive $20,000 to support the creation of the memorial on Chestnut Street  in downtown Portsmouth.
