Gundalow Company Seeks Volunteer Educators

towncrierlogoHEAR YE! HEAR YE!

The Gundalow Company is recruiting volunteer educators to share their love of learning and experience lovely mornings on the shores of Great Bay. Volunteer educators are needed week-day mornings this fall to work with elementary school students onboard the gundalow during the Great Bay Discovery Center's Cultural History Programs.  The Captain Edward H. Adams, a replica of the sailing barges that once carried cargo throughout our tidal region, will be docked at Sandy Point in Greenland, NH for seven weeks beginning September 10. The school field trip includes a visit to the landing and a dockside program of engaging hands-on activities.  (Continued below)

No experience is necessary, just an enthusiasm for young learners and for the Bay. The first training session will be held aboard the gundalow on Wednesday, September 5 beginning at 10:30 AM. Please RSVP by calling 603-433-9505.

Gundalows were once the primary mode of transporting cargo to tidewater towns in the Piscataqua Region; now the Captain Adams is used as a dockside platform for maritime heritage and environmental education in those same towns. School groups, community organizations, and summer campers are welcome aboard for special programs and the gundalow is open to the public in each town. Additionally, the Gundalow Company operates the sailing vessel Piscataqua, which offers public sails and also serves as a floating classroom for area school and youth groups.

The mission of the nonprofit Gundalow Company, based in Portsmouth, is to “protect the Piscataqua Region’s maritime heritage and environment through education and action.” Volunteers are vital to making each gundalow season a success and are welcomed at any time. Additional opportunities exist for onboard greeters, boat builders, and deckhands. Please contact the Gundalow Company for additional information:  603-433-9505.
