Archaeology Volunteers Needed for Lab Work at Counting House Museum Print Email

History buffs interested in archaeology have an opportunity this winter to assist Dr. Neill De Paoli processing recently discovered artifacts dating as far back as the mid-1600s. An archaeology “lab” for washing, reconstructing, and identifying artifacts will be held at the Counting House Museum on Saturday afternoons from noon to 3:30 pm throughout the winter.  Volunteers are needed and will be trained on the job; no prior experience is needed. Fabulous Find Donates to Burying Ground Memorial Print Email

Since its founding two years ago, The Fabulous Find: A Caring Community Thrift Shop in Kittery, Maine has donated more than $250,000 in shop revenues back to Piscataqua Region non-profits. For November 2012 the beneficiaries were the African Burying Ground Memorial Park in Portsmouth and York Land Trust. At the reception announcing the results, Board members Marcye Philbrook, Anne Bryer, Phyllis Welch and Anne Hunt (store manager), presented $8,000, divided evenly between the two. 300 Years of Berwick Celebrated in Town Hall Exhibit Print Email

We have all heard how the Pilgrims struggled during their early years at Plimoth Plantation. Thanks to the hard work of archaeologists with the Old Berwick Historical Society, local residents can now glimpse early decades of settlement in this part of New England. South Berwick was settled about 14 years after Plimoth, and was part of a larger town designated as Berwick in 1713. “Some things, like sharing camaraderie over pints of ale, haven’t changed in 300 years,” said Paula Bennett, a society board member. “A tavern stood where Brattle Street meets Oldfields Road, which was then the center of town, just as people enjoy the taverns now thriving downtown South Berwick.” (Continued below)

 
Star Island Gets Gold Star for Green Initiative Print Email

Star Island announces a successful push in realizing its Green Gosport Initiative. Started in the spring of 2012, the GGI is the non-profit Star Island Corporation’s endeavor to become a more sustainable facility. The initiative focused on energy, waste, food, and education. Star is pleased to share that substantial goals were met in each area including a great reduction in landfill waste this summer and further development towards a large-scale solar array on island for 2013. Funds Arriving for New PPAF Pavilion Print Email

Prescott Park Arts Festival has received donations from two area businesses in support of the project to upgrade and improve the Prescott Park pavilion building. Federal Savings Bank has pledged $25,000 and Secure Planning, Inc. has pledged $16,000 towards the building project. (Continued below)
