A horseback journey to Boston in January 1791 may have taken days and been hazardous for a 55-year-old rider. But John Tompson of  South Berwick prevailed, returning home with a charter passed by the Massachusetts legislature and signed by Governor John Hancock. A chance meeting in 1937 through the federal Works Progress Administration led Mary Goldsmith and Edwin Scheier to begin a seven-decade long partnership that would place them in the forefront of the American Studio Pottery Movement.
