Seacoast theatergoers will finally enjoy the work of Sarah Ruhl on March 29, when her play “Eurydice” opens at the Players’ Ring. Ruhl has received a MacArthur “Genius Grant” and two Pulitzer Prize finalist nominations. (Continued below)
Known for her distinct, poetic style, Ruhl blends comedy, myth, and melancholy to create a theatrical brew all her own. Despite her world-wide success, her work had yet to be produced on the Seacoast.
The play is a retelling of the Orpheus myth. The classic version of the story chronicles the world’s greatest musician’s attempt to rescue his wife, Eurydice, from the Underworld: he must lead her from Hades without looking back at her.
Ruhl focuses her plot on Eurydice. The heroine reconnects with her deceased father while she contends with the Lord of the Underworld and a chorus of bitter Stones. Meanwhile, Orpheus struggles to bring his partner back to the land of the living.
The play is a meditation on love, loss, and memory. Called “an inexpressibly moving theatrical fable” by The New York Times and “touching, inventive, invigoratingly compact and luminously liquid” by The San Francisco Chronicle, “Eurydice” meets audience enthusiasm and critical acclaim wherever it is staged.
The show at the Players’ Ring is produced and directed by Bretton Reis, with a superlative cast including Molly Sullivan, Glenn Provost, Norm Smith, Eric St. Cyr, Erika Wilson, Paul Strand, and Teddi Kenick-Bailey.
“Eurydice” contains mild sexuality and is appropriate for most audiences.
