Taming Capitalism with Bill Moyers

Bill MoyersMARK YOUR CALENDAR

On Wednesday, March 20 at 7:00pm in the lower meetinghouse of the First Religious Society, 26 Pleasant Street, Newburyport, there will be a presentation of Bill Moyers February 22 segment of “Taming Capitalism.”  This features two interviews; the first with Professor Richard Wolff, Emeritus Economics Professor from UMASS and now Visiting Professor Graduate Program in International Affairs at the New School in New York.  (Continued below)

In his book “Capitalism Hits the Fan,” Professor Wolff breaks down the root causes of today's economic crisis; the global economic meltdown and what to do about it.

Also featured will be Saru Jayaraman, author of “Behind the Kitchen Door,” looking for justice for restaurant workers whose minimum wage is $2.25 per hour.  Many of these people need food stamps at twice the rate of average citizens.  Jayaraman is the co-founder and co-director of the Restaurant Opportunities Center United and Director of the FoodLabor Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley She is an activist and frequent presenter on political beliefs who works primarily for the rights of low-wage workers.  Her book exposes the story of who is behind the kitchen door, how they are treated and why it matters.

At a time of the Sequester and Congressional paralysis, with many people asking the question ‘is the US in decline’ we encourage  you to join for this first of two parts discussion of Capitalism – is it a viable system?  Apparently Prof. Wolff argues through the second part of the Moyers show that ‘Democracy at work can be a cure for what ails capitalism.’
