Doleac Receives Order of the Rising Sun Print Email

The Government of Japan has announced that Charles B. Doleac, Esq. of Portsmouth NH is the recipient of the Imperial Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. The award is made twice a year to fewer than 100 foreign nationals who foster positive relationships with Japan. Atty. Doleac is one of 13 in the US (among 59 foreign nationals) to be honored in the 2011 Spring Decorations. He is the only recipient in New England and is the first New Hampshire citizen ever to receive the award. (Full press release below)

 
What Next for Jewett Eastman House? Print Email

With the departure of South Berwick Public Library expected next year, the Jewett Eastman Memorial Committee is now exploring the future of the Jewett-Eastman House. The property has been a community center since the death of Theodore Eastman, Sarah Orne Jewett’s nephew, in 1931. The author herself had lived here more than half her life, writing over 140 stories, novels and poems during the 33 years before she moved to the Jewett House, her birthplace next door, in 1887. (Continued below)

APRIL 2011 -- During roof renovations to the Raitt Homestead Farm Museum's 1896 Main Farmhouse a relic from years gone by literally fell out of the soffit, much to the surprise of everyone at the Farm Museum. “JT,” a member of building contractor JD MacDougall's crew, was working on the soffit when the revolver fell out.  JT handed the 1858 revolver to Tom Raitt, caretaker of the Raitt Homestead Farm Museum. WRITE IN NOW to Support NH History Day Print Email

DAVID WATTERS: I have introduced legislation to declare the third Friday in October as New Hampshire History Day.  The legislation is meant to promote education about and appreciation of New Hampshire history.  It also supports preservation of historical resources.  It is hoped that the date will become a focus for activity in schools as well as events, open houses, and so forth by New Hampshire’s historical societies, museums, and libraries.  The date was selected due to the number of important historical events in October in state history, to accommodate school and historical society schedules, and to avoid conflict with other dates commemorated by proclamation. Gundalow Gets $30K Grant Print Email

JANUARY 2011 --The Gundalow Company has been awarded a $30,000 grant from the Robbins-de Beaumont Foundation. The one-year grant will support the development and implementation of new “place-based” environmental programs in the Piscataqua Maritime Region. “It's an honor to support an organization with such strong leadership, strategic planning, community support and willingness to collaborate and share insights,” noted John Robbins, Robbins-de Beaumont Foundation Advisory Board Member. “We're excited to become a part of the Gundalow's future programming.” (Continued below)
