January 2011 – The National Maritime Historical Society has named Woodson K. Woods and the 1812 reproduction Lynx with the NMHS Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Maritime Education. The official award ceremony will be held at the New York Yacht Club in October 2011. The award is to be presented to Woods and his team for designing, building and crewing the 1812 privateer Lynx, but most specifically for creating the Lynx sailing program to incorporate sail training with a hands-on educational experience of history. (Continued below)

Woods, who imagined and funded the original $3 million tall ship recently learned of the planned award at his home in Hawaii. Lynx was built and launched at Rockport, Maine in 2001 and has officially registered it’s home port as Portsmouth, NH.  Lynx traveled the West Coast until 2010 when it returned to the East for bicentennial events relating to the War of 1812. Lynx visited Portsmouth, NH on Memorial Day in 2010 before touring Canada and the Great Lakes, then retuning to winter quarters in Florida.

The NMHS Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Education honors individuals and organizations whose outstanding achievements in maritime education bring history alive for young people, providing real life results and getting young people involved in the continuous process of learning that will have a fundamental impact on their lives.
