Strange and foreboding, this film explores the evolution of Bloody Kansas and the border wars that spawned Jesse James and his fellow bushwackers. It does this Hollywood-style, through a fictionalized William Quantrill, who comes up against – hard to imagine – both John Wayne and Roy Rogers.

If you plan to watch only one film about Jesse James (out of at least 50 out there) this is not a bad choice. Although it goes awry of the true historical character, this "brotherly" film does capture the fraternal nature of the guerilla bushwackers. It was family against family in the bloody border states, where the Civil War played out like modern day Iraq and blood was thicker than water.

Girls can be outlaws too, at least in the world of the B-Western. Like Jesse James, farmer Jean Shelby falls under the spell of William Quantrill. But unlike the famous outlaw, this lady bushwacker is in it for the love, not the money. And she must avenge her family.
