New England Lighthouse Tours now in business

Jeremy D’Entremont of Portsmouth is known locally as "The Lighthouse Guy" for good reason. He’s the author of hundreds of articles on lighthouse history and preservation, along with several books including his latest, "The Lighthouse Handbook: New England," published by Cider Mill Press.

Jeremy is the founder and co-chairman of the Friends of Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse, and the historian and first vice president of the American Lighthouse Foundation. He’s now launching a new venture, New England Lighthouse Tours.

From late May into early October, D’Entremont is offering two narrated tours every week, leaving from in front of the garage on Hanover Street in downtown Portsmouth in a luxury motorcoach, furnished by Dineen Coach of Kittery.

PORTSMOUTH TO PORTLAND ALL DAY TOUR

Every Thursday’s all-day "Lighthouses of Portsmouth & Portland" tour will include a visit inside Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse in New Castle, New Hampshire, followed by a drive to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where participants will visit the famous Portland Head Light and its museum, along with two lighthouses in South Portland. Lunch (included) will be at Joe’s Boathouse on the South Portland waterfront. On the way back to Portsmouth, the tour will stop for shopping at Lighthouse Depot in Wells, the world’s largest lighthouse gift store. The final stop will be the scenic Cape Neddick "Nubble" Light in York.

PORTSMOUTH HARBOR TOUR

Every Friday, there will be a five-hour local tour called "Seacoast Lights and Portsmouth Harbor by Land & Sea." This tour includes a visit inside Portsmouth Harbor Light, followed by a harbor cruise around Portsmouth Harbor aboard the M/V Heritage. Included in the cruise is a close-up look at Whaleback Lighthouse in Kittery. Following the cruise, the tour will head to the Cape Neddick "Nubble" Light in York.

D’Entremont sees the tour business as a way to reach new audiences. "I expect that the majority of people taking the tours will be tourists, " he says, "but I also hope that many local people will take part. These trips are a fun experience for the whole family." A portion of the proceeds from all the tours will go to lighthouse preservation. "Donations for preservation are hard to come by these days," D’Entremont says. "These tours will provide a way for people to have fun and donate to a good cause at the same time."
