Some have called this brown iron skeletal tower an ugly duckling among the graceful white lighthouses of our coast. But to many lighthouse fans, Marblehead Light is unique in our region and thus possesses its own charm.

What if the federal government decided to build a lighthouse in your front yard? A 19th century scholar used his clout to keep the noisy fog bell quiet, but this unique light was built and still survives on the Rhode Island coast.

Before the construction of the Cape Cod Canal in 1914, every vessel traveling between Boston and points south had to negotiate the treacherous bars near Race Point at the northern tip of Cape Cod.

The scene at Cape Neddick Lighthouse on the island called the "Nubble," near York Beach in Maine, is as pretty as a postcard. Its slightly offshore location lends an air of mystery, adding to its charm.

Though deeply endangered, White Light shines on at the nine rocky Isles of Shoals just 10 miles out from Portsmouth Harbor in New Hampshire. Difficult to reach, it depends now on the fundraising abilities of local kids.
