Moving the Wentworth House (1936)

Paul Wentworth House 1936

The 1701 Paul Wentworth house is back in NH. It left in 1936 and the US government was there to document the deconstruction. See those incredible historic photos here. The first move was captured by WPS aritsts and preserved in the LIbrary of Congress.

Paul Wentowrth House Return to Rollinsford, 2004

Not many houses get built three times. When the last descendant to own the 1701 Paul Wentworth House decided to leave New Hampshire, he took the whole house. The "first period" colonial was taken apart and moved to Dover, Massachusetts. We covered that story elsewhere, but since then the Library of Congress has released 150 pictures of the house being moved in 1936. A WPA photographer captured the entire story in 150 clear images. The following gallery is just a sample of that historic portfolio, courtesy of Uncle Sam.
