Let’s get right to the pictures. This collection includes eight doorway postcards from Portsmouth, NH published here at full size. We’ve added portions of the descriptions from the back of each card where the information is considered accurate today.

Lyman House shows the severe simple lines of the Colonial period.
The door, window frames and graceful pillars are typical of those days.

Warner House finished in 1723 was scarcely surpassed by any private
home in New England. The bricks for the walls are 18 inches thick.

Portsmouth Athenaeum building was first erected in 1803.
The canons on either side of the doorway were taken from the British
at the Battle of Lake Erie by Commodore Perry in 1813.

Sherburne House built in 1725 in the much admired colonial style.
