Trash Landing of Space Capsule?

Jones Dump detail / SeacoastNH.com

SeacoastNH.com Presents
Historic Portsmouth #244

Yes, this photo comes from the 1960s (or early 70s). It shows what appears to be a super-sized Mercury space capsul at the Jones Ave. Dump. But no, Alan Shepard did not crash land in Portsmouth, NH. (continued below)

We know this was an incinerator installed at the smoldering dump near Sagamore Creek. Do you have more details? The photo comes from the fascinating Douglas Armsden collection. The Portsmouth Athenaeum is currently scanning over 4,000 negatives donated by Armsden of Kittery Point. Roughly half the collection can now be reviewed online at PortsmouthAthenaeum.org.
