Progress Obliterates Vaughan St

HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #153

Portsmouth’s pedestrian Vaughan Mall looks nothing like it did in 1900. The towering Joseph Brewster, Jr. House at the corner of Hanover St was torn down in 1904 to create a telephone exchange. Margeson’s Furniture now sits at what was the front yard of the Brewster house. Nothing seen here survived urban renewal.
