Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #157
If this looks like a 1705 house sitting atop a 19th century storefront – it is. Nathaniel Rogers’ house on Congress St. was reportedly the first in town with square, rather than triangular, windowpanes. Lifted 10 feet around 1871, it sat above this bakery, market and bike shop in 1902. The sign at left advertises Robeck’s Famous Orange Cake, a Portsmouth favorite.
