Moving the Sheafe Warehouse

21900.jpgStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #219

Two 18th century warehouses at Prescott Park are the last large relics of the bustling waterfront back when Portsmouth was a world trade center in the Age of Sail. The Sheafe Warehouse, as seen here, was originally located across from Point of Graves at what is now the site of a bridge to Peirce Island. (Continued below)

Legend says John Paul Jones fitted out the RANGER here. The Sheafe, with its overhanging second floor, was still in place during this 1935 photograph. It sits today near the restored 1790s Shaw Warehouse that was adapted to park offices at what was called Union Wharf.
