HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #90

On January 28, 1886 northern New England was hit by one of the heaviest ice storms on record. Portsmouth photographer L.V. Newell rushed out to capture icy images the following day. His photos sold very well and showed both the sparkling beauty and devastation. Here damaged trees are seen at the Rockingham National Bank, now Piscataqua Savings, the city’s oldest bank.
