Newspaper RiotStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #43b

On April 10, 1865 a mob attacked the offices of the States and Union newspaper at 31 Daniel Street. Elated by news of the end of the Civil War, the crowd trashed the pro-South weekly paper and smashed the printing press. Owner Joshua L. Foster escaped unharmed and continued to run his newspaper and started two more. This rare and damaged image looks up Daniel St. toward the reiver.
