Chapel on the Shoals

GosportStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #5

In 1790 the fishermen of Star Island burned their wooden church for fuel on the treeless Isles of Shoals. Missionaries to the island rebuilt the Gosport chapel out of stone in 1800. The tower seen here with the codfish weathervane was blown down in 1892 and rebuilt by Celia's brother Oscar Laighton. The chapel is still used every summer evening for nondenominational services by Star Island Corporation guests.
