The condition of the monument is evident in this early
colorized postcard. It was repaired in 1914 and had
returned to this condition by the mid 20th century.
This postcard is roughly the view from the Smith Monument
looking back toward the inhabited portion of Star Island with the
Rev Tuck Memorial in the middle.
Looking back the Smith Monument is located
at the back center of this scene. Note the almost total
lack of vegetation on the island, unlike today.
