What is Seacoast Day at the Shoals?
towncrierlogoHEAR YE!

JUNE 2010 -- On Saturday, June 5, 150 invited representatives from Seacoast business, arts and education organizations, and state and local government agencies will spend the afternoon on Star Island. The event marks the return of the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company (ISSCO) as the main ferry service for Star Island’s conference guests.

"We hold Seacoast Day to get the word out to our neighbors in the Seacoast that Star Island is a destination for day and overnight visitors as well as the site for about 40 conferences each summer," said Vicky Hardy, CEO of Star Island Corporation, a nonprofit that maintains the island and its facilities.

As the Seacoast Day co-host, ISSCO will provide transportation to the island aboard the M/V Thomas Laighton, sailing out of Portsmouth Harbor. Along the way, guests of this special occasion will enjoy a narrated tour covering 400 years of history pertaining to Portsmouth and the Isles of Shoals by ISSCO’s onboard historian.

"We are extremely excited to be a part of this annual event," said ISSCO owner Robin Whittaker. "This free tour on Seacoast Day offers an ideal opportunity to introduce local business leaders and partners to the beauty of Star Island." This voyage will be ISSCO’s first trip to Star Island in 2010. ISSCO’s full summer schedule, which includes trips to Star Island six days each week, starts June 26th.

"Last summer, about 5,000 people sailed on the Thomas Laighton for day visits to Star Island," said Hardy. "This summer, with day visitors and conference-goers, we expect about 15,000 people will come to Portsmouth on their way to Star Island. This is such good news for Star Island, for ISSCO, and for Portsmouth. I'm thrilled!"

Star Island Corporation is a nonprofit organization which maintains the island and its facilities and provides hospitality services for visitors. The mission since 1916 is to hold and administer Star Island and other properties for educational, religious, and kindred purposes.
