The Portsmouth Historic House Associates is pleased to announce the final installment in their 2011 Historic Wall-coverings Series, which will take place on Friday, October 7, 2011 with tours of the John Paul Jones House, owned by the Portsmouth Historical Society, and Historic New England’s Rundlet-May House with authority Richard Nylander. (See below for reservations)

Tours of the John Paul Jones House begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m and will be led by curator Sandra Rux.  The tour will examine the early museums wallpapers, including some in the attic, a location not normally visited by the public, which were added as part of an early 20th century redecoration. The tour will explore how the changes in museum papers reflect the changing interpretation of the house over time.

At 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., the tours continue at the Rundlet-May House where guests will encounter examples of Green Worm, Peach Damask, and Paris Flock—some of the fine original French wallpapers James Rundlet imported shortly after building his house in 1807, giving it a touch of international flair.   Noted wallpaper expert and Historic New England curator emeritus Richard C. Nylander will lead the tour of the Rundlet-May House and will share insights from over thirty years of research in the house.

The John Paul Jones House is located at 43 Middle Street and the Rundlet-May House is at 364 Middle Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Admission is $10 and includes both houses. Reservations are required; you may pay at the beginning of the program. Please call 603-436-8240 for more information or to register.
