Pat Spaulding: Perched for Flight

In her new show Pat explores the atomic age on family dentist trips to Boston in her story "A Bomb in the Closet," invites the audience on a romanticized back-to-nature 60s trip in "Protecting the Dream," and brings together first love and Catholic guilt in "Willie Was My First." These and other stories will be told as Pat practices her newfound skill of baton twirling and refound skill of hula-hooping in this eclectic show of stand-up storytelling for grown-ups.

Pat Spalding is a recovering puppeteer turned monologist. Based in seacoast New Hampshire since the mid-80s, she made a career of puppetry with her business Ha'penny Theatre before finally giving in to her true calling: storytelling for adults.

"Too many years of schlepping," she says. For twenty-five years she toured the country in a van crammed with hand puppets, shadow figures, costume characters, staging, lights, props, and a husband. "The first 20 years were fun," she recalls, "but the last five were getting old . . . and so was I." So Pat cashed in the whole accessory package to free up her hands and heart for a second career.

Described as honest, moving, and downright hilarious, Pat's material and her physical storytelling style are praised for both their depth and humor. Her essays have aired on NH Public Radio and her poetry readings have been part of two Portsmouth, NH Poet Laureate Programs.

Perched for Flight...and looking for a landing will be performed Saturday, August 21 at 2pm & 8pm and Sunday, August 22 at 2pm & 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 ($13 for patrons 65 or better) and available by calling 603.300.2986 or online. Shows often sell out so reservations are recommended.

The West End Studio Theatre, located at 959 Islington Street, is a wonderfully intimate 60-seat theatre. WEST is air-conditioned and has comfortable seating with plenty of legroom, off-street parking, and is wheelchair accessible.
