FOUND JOHN STARK’S WATCH?
I am in the possession of a gold pocket watch with a serial # in the case and General Stark's name engraved inside . I am interested in confirming if this old watch is in fact a possession of General John Stark and if the library or family may have an interest in it . The gold case was manufactured by the Dueber Watch Case Manufacturing Co. > I look forward to your reply.
Muggit

EDITOR’S REPLY: We applaud your intent to donate the artifact to an historic groupd. However In this case, based on a fast web search, it appears that the company you noted was incorporated 100 years after the Revolution, so there is likely no connection between John Stark's family and the production of a commercial watch using his name. That’s just our guess. If you search on eBay you will find dozens of pocket watches in the "Molly Stark" style from this era. The John Stark Home in Manchester, the Manchester Historical Society and the NH Historical Society would know more, and may still be interested in preserving this item.

IS THIS WHITTIER’S FOUNTAIN?
Oak Knoll fountain/ Library of CongressI have a question about a very detailed water fountain I have. As the story goes...my grandmother lived in Danvers Ma and happened to be passing by what I'm told was Mr Whittier's house on Oak Knoll. My dad recalls that the house was being taken down or renovated and this water fountain was going to be destroyed. The contractor gave it to my grandmother....who gave it to my dad and I now have it. My question is...are there any pictures of the house in Danvers with this water fountain? It is beautifully detailed with 3 kids pulling in a fishing net with the oldest / tallest child holding a pan of fish - the water comes up thru the pan...I'd guess the max height of this is 3' and the width with the 3 kids may be the same.....

The statue/water fountain is a ceramic white color and even the fish in the pan have incredible detail - scales, eyes etc...quite nice. My Aunt, who seems to know a little about it thinks there may be a poem that this fountain may have been created after...not sure but if you have any information on this I would appreciate anything you may know. The statue sits on my front lawn....I don't use it as a fountain...just a nice ornament....(I have 3 kids of my own) and I have to repair it as some frost split it in half several years ago and one of the 3 children has to be mended....even with this, it still looks quite nice...again, any information or thoughts on what the origin of this is would be very appreciated. Sincerely
Eric Brett

EDITOR’S REPLY: Look what we found in the Library of Congress web site. I’m going to assume this is your statue as it appeared on the grounds of Oak Knoll on Summer Street in Danvers, MA. The photo is part of an online collection entitled "Historic American Buildings Survey/Historic American Engineering Record". There is also a shot of the house itself. Pat Dubus at the Whittier Home in Amesbury notes that this fountain may have been installed after Whittier’s time and that is what you’ll need to research next. The photo was taken in 1940, four decades after the poet’s death. Still it has historic, if not artistic value, and would look great next to our office if you ever tire of it. – JDR (Photos from the Library of Congress, American Memory web site. FOUNTAIN FOLLOW-UP : Thank you very, very much for your research. This is the statue I have in my yard and it's really great to see it in that setting on his property back in 1940. You certainly made my day!!

SAYS PEOPLE SHOULD RESPECT JPJ CRYPT
When I think about John Paul Jones Web-site, I think about you guys. These days many web-site of John Paul Jones. First, I am very pasionate with the stories of John Paul Jones the Captain.

I visit his Musulini very often, ere in the Academy it is suppostly to behis Crypt. I also visit his house in Virginia, the only place I can put flowers for his soul. I has visit the house that he has suppostly died. in Paris. The stories of his life through your information it is the only one I trust till the present. I have not ever viist Seaport, Postmouth my friends from Italy did.

About his site here at the Navy Academy it is a pity. Sometimes I think I am stupid to think this week. I the navy personel might think I am crazy but I do not care. I am Catholic any way we suppost to think this way. This suppost to be a place of respect and meditation, for people to think and come into terms the body of John Paul Jones here represents the only think near to the American history past and future in display. Instead a muse park sometimes like an Museum Park. I have complain many times about it, people talk and laugh and practically not respect from the tour guide to the customers.

It is under the Church. Why it is treat like a Museum can some one explain Why? It is not treated like a hero instead a tourist like a conference facility. for students to learn. How we suppost to honor our heroes. The dead suppost to be put to rest and sleep silent and respect. If this the real John Paul Jones? The site of the not know soldier in Arlington Cementary the one the change of the soldier is the must beautiful and well preformance of any military why John Paul Jones could not be treated with such honor.Thank you

ROCK MAN SURFACES IN TEXAS
A neighbor of mine sent this rock formation home with my boys and asked us to take digital pics of it and see if we had any idea what it is. As you can see by the attached pic, it looks like a fossil of a human face, but even more interesting is that it has some of the features of the tribe who wore ornaments in the mouth. Any information would be very helpful. Thanks a bunch.
CJ Wilson

Rockman / SeacoastNH.comEDITOR RESPONDS: Great photos of a great rock. Technically a "fossil" of a human face isn't possible, as we understand it. Looks mostly like a rock to our panel of experts, with some coincidentally human face shapes. We're kicking around a special section called WHAT IS IT? If we get more items, we’ll go for it. We love interesting inane stuff, whether or not it is historically important.Might still have value on eBay.

CJW REACTION: LOL that's What I told the boys, I didn't believe that a face of human could fossilize, but they were so excited about it. They also find the typical arrow heads and tools out here quite a bit. It will be interesting to see the section on what's this. There' no telling what we'll see in it.

RARE READER COMMUTES BY BIKE
Please tell David that I enjoyed his article about biking to work. I live in Portsmouth and really enjoy biking into my office. Not having to hassle with a parking space is a great plus. Get some odd looks but mostly smiles from people when they see how much I enjoy biking. Thank David for writing this great article. Happen to see when I was searching for any established bike trails or routes for seacoast cycling.

PIRATE TREASURE ON THE SHOALS
I have been researching the treasure tale Ocean Born May and the caches of treasure that where supposedly left on Appledore by Philip Babb. I'm interested in getting access to the island next spring and or summer to search around with a metal detector. I wanted to know who owns these islands and if its possible to contact them to obtain permission to dock on Appledore?
David Crooks Jr.

EDITOR’S REPLY: It’s a great story, but it is a myth. The stories have no basis in fact as, hopefully, our site points out. That has not stopped untold numbers of treasure hunters from wandering the Isles. All of the islands are privately owned and it is illegal to remove any items found from a private island. But you can certainly contact the owners with your request. Appledore is owned by the Star Island Corporation and used by the Marine Shoals Lab run by Cornell and the University of New Hampshire. There is no regular public transportation to Appledore and the Marine Lab runs its own ferry for students who attend their classes and programs.

VISITNG AFRICAN CHIEFS AND PBHT 10th ANNIVERSARY
Nana Adu-Ampoma / SeacoastNH.comThe generous editorial in the Portsmouth Herald on September 7, 2005 was an unexpected gift on the 10th anniversary of the Black Heritage Trail. We deeply appreciate the coverage you and Foster’s Daily Democrat have given our activities over the years. Your words of congratulations upon reaching this milestone hold great value. And thank you to all in the Seacoast community for the support that has helped make our first decade a success.

I write also on behalf of the Portsmouth-Greater Accra Sister City Connection to publicly thank all those who helped make the recent visit of Nana Kwame Takyi I and Nana Adu-Ampomah II a cultural landmark in the city’s history. Although several members of the Sister City program have traveled from our region to villages of the greater Accra region, this was the first visit of representatives from Ghana to the United States as part of the official Portsmouth-Greater Accra Sister City Connection.

Both Mayor Sirrell and Governor Lynch graciously received Nana Takyi and Nana Ampomah. They all exchanged gifts from their constituencies. Also, during their two-week tour of New Hampshire, the chieftains visited area organizations and schools, including the UNH campuses in Durham and Manchester, and they were guests in area homes.

Nana Kwame TakyiIn recognition of the past connections of Ghana and New Hampshire, the exchange visit of the two chieftains was planned to coincide with the Black Heritage Trail’s 10th anniversary celebration. On September 10th, their first day of scheduled appearances, the Ghanaian dignitaries were honored guests at a free public concert at South Church, a truly memorable event. Thank you to all of the musicians who gave their talent in a most incredibly joyful performance. The chieftains were nearly overwhelmed, as we all were, with the emotion of that historic evening.

Every person who came to the concert or worked behind the scenes helped to fill the sanctuary with enthusiasm and good will. We could not have hoped for anything better! And we are pleased to report that our audience donated $1275.33 that night to the Salvation Army’s hurricane relief efforts.

The Portsmouth-Greater Accra Sister City Connection has already begun planning for the upcoming year. For more information about the program please contact Liz Doucette at 603-431-4565.

FILM ABOUT MONHEGAN HERMIT
I am writing because an exchange of letters that I found from your web site from 1997 has sparked a large research project for me, and ultimately a documentary film. The article by Dennis Robinson "The Stones Of Monhegan" spurred John Estabrook to write a letter of reply about the Hermit Of Manana, Ray Phillips, whom I am making a film about. Thank you so much,

KITTERY YARD STILL IN KITTERY
I am a historical researcher/writer compiling a study of the First Marine Battalion (Reinforced) in action during the Spanish-American War of 1898 at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A number of Marines from Marine Barracks, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard were transferred to the First Marine Battalion where it was organized at New York Navy Yard, New York City, New York, in April of 1898.

To your reader who thought that the shipyard was in Portsmouth, note that Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was named after the major city in the area where it was built. However, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is located on Seavy Island, Kittery, Maine, and not in New Hampshire. The location of the shipyard was a "bone of contention" between New Hampshire and Maine for many years. Its location in Maine was affirmed by the Supreme Court in 1977 (Lobster fishing dispute) and again by the Supreme Court in 2001 (border issue) confirming that the border between the two states is the middle of the Piscataqua River which places Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Seavy Island, squarely within the jurisdiction of Maine.
