Portsmouth Launches Segway Tours

Seacoast_Segway_ToursSeacoast Segway Tours is introducing a new way to explore the city, with tours  continuing through October 2011. Seacoast Segway Tours offers two different one-hour Segway Experience tours for those who want to experience Portsmouth on a different set of wheels. Two three-hour, guided tours are also available for those who want to appreciate Portsmouth's and New Castle's history in depth. (Continued below)

The Historic Homes and City Tour is the first introduction to every historic house museum in the city. The City and Waterfront Tour takes riders to New Castle and back.

All tours are professionally guided and include instruction on using a Segway Personal Transporter.

"There are so many people interested in trying out a Segway, and it's so much fun. Put on top of that the beauty of Portsmouth and its rich history, this will be a great tour for people from multiple generations," said Heidi Bunnell, executive director of Seacoast Segway Tours.

The two, one-hour Segway Experience tours are the North End and South End tours. These will be lighter on content and fun "glides" through the city.

"I've written tours and guidebooks for years," said historian J. Dennis Robinson, "but crafting these tours was a brand-new experience. This technology finally allows visitors and locals to get a complete overview of New Hampshire's only seaport. The Segway lets riders travel from the 1664 (Richard) Jackson House in the North End to the 1760-era Benning Wentworth Mansion way down Little Harbor Road — and see every major historic sight in between."

Seacoast Segway Tours will be the 47th U.S. authorized tour location, joining others such as Newport, R.I.; Savannah, Ga.; and Boston.

Segway Experience tours will be offered multiple times a day, while full-length tours are offered by appointment up to three times a day on Segway's i2 Personal Transporters. Tours for individuals, couples, corporate events and specially booked tours are available.

All tours will comply with established safety procedures. Riders must complete a brief basic skills training session and must wear a helmet.
