Poetry Reading in Whittier Garden

whittierMARK YOUR CALENDAR

If you love poetry and listening to the spoken word – you are in luck! The Whittier Home Museum and Tapestry of Voices invite you to its 13th annual collaborative readings from the poetry of John Greenleaf Whittier on Sunday, August 7 from 3-4:30 p.m. The poetry readings will take place in the garden of the Whittier Home Museum, 86 Friend Street, Amesbury. (Continued below)

“There’s a sense that Whittier is here with us in spirit,” says Harris Gardener, founder of the poetry organization Tapestry of Voices from Boston. “We’ll have ten readers, 5 are members of the Whittier Home Museum and five are Tapestry of Voices poets -- each devoted to Whittier’s poetry. The maximum time for each reader is eight minutes, so we’ll dive right in at 3:00 pm and get started.”

Cynthia Costello, president of the Whittier Home Museum, has chosen to read “Barefoot Boy” and “At Last;” Walter Howard, a favorite amongst the Cambridge/Boston crowd, will sing his selection: Dear Father of Mankind,” a Whittier hymn. Harris Gardner will read “The River Path” – a fitting choice given that its setting is Pleasant Valley in Amesbury, overlooking the Merrimac River.

The free reading also includes Gus Reusch, curator at the Whittier Birthplace in Haverhill, reading “Farewell” and “In School Days;” Lainie Senechal, “To My Sister;” Skye Wentworth, “The Double-Headed Snake of Newbury;” Toni Treadway and her husband, Bob Brodsky, will be reading “How the Women Went from Dover.” Les Weiner and Kristine N. Malpica will also be reading Whittier.

An informal reception will follow the readings and light refreshments will be served. The Tapestry of Voices reading, free and open to the public, will take place in the garden at the Whittier Home. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held in the Whittier Home’s meeting room. For information, call Harris Gardner, (617) 306-9484 or the Whittier Home at (978) 388-1337.
