Ogunquit Museum of Art Turns 60

Walt Kuhn at Ogunquit Art GalleryOPEN MAY- OCTOBER 2013

The Ogunquit Museum of American Art, the only museum in Maine devoted exclusively to collecting and exhibiting American art, opens its doors for its 60th year. The Museum was founded in 1953 by artist, collector and philanthropist, Henry Strater. (Continued below)

The season commences May 8 with the exhibition Sixty Works-60 years. Director and curator, Ron Crusan, has chosen from the Museum's permanent collection 60 pieces that illustrate the Museum's broad inventory of American art from the 19th century to the present. Also on exhibition, Henry Strater: A Life
in Art, will present a very personal selection of photos and artwork, from Strater family archives and the Museum's permanent collection. These illustrate Strater's life as family man, collector, philanthropist, and
dedicated community member; all of which culminated in his founding the OMAA.

The opening reception is slated for May 11 from 5-7 p.m. The opening is sponsored by Jonathans Restaurant of Ogunquit, who will provide the refreshments. To further commemorate this milestone, Pompe Strater-Vidal, Strater's daughter, will be present to sign her book, Henry Strater's Vision, and to offer personal reminiscences of that vision taking form.

Also, a variety of programs celebrating the Museum's history as an important cultural venue will be presented. A year of looking back and looking forward will highlight both artists who started working in the area in the later part of the 19th century, when the Ogunquit art colony was established, and mid-career and emerging artists who will carry on the aesthetic tradition - but perhaps in nontraditional ways. Later in the season exhibitions will include Andy Warhol: American Icon; Charles and Marsha: the Woodburys in Holland; Emerging Artists-2013; and A Community Collects: Selections from the York
Hospital Collection.

The Ogunquit Museum of American Art is open daily from 10am-5pm May 8th through October 31. For more information about exhibitions, special events and educational programs, visit www.ogunquitmuseum.org.
