October is Archeology Month in NH

Archeology_MonthMARK YOUR CALENDAR  

The New Hampshire Archeological Society, in partnership with the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources and New Hampshire Department of Transportation, is sponsoring the 2010 New Hampshire Archeology Month in October. (See events list below)   

Archeologists, museums, historical societies and other organizations will hold exciting events to share the results of their latest discoveries, theories and favorite stories of archeological sleuthing.  

Some of the planned events and lectures include:  

·        Plymouth State University Lecture Series at Rounds Hall, Room 223. All presentations begin at 7 p.m.

      "Cutting to the Chase: Results of the Strawbery Banke Archaeological Field Schools at the 1762 Chase House Site" by Sheila Charles; October 6.

     "Seeing through Time: Thirty Years of Field Work at Historic Period and Native American Sites throughout New Hampshire" by Dr. Victoria Bunker; October 13.

       "The Ancient Wine Trade in the Mediterranean: Amphoras, Amphora Cargos and Ship Wrecks" by Dr. David Switzer; October 20.

      “New Thoughts on the Oldest Sites: Current Research in Northern New Hampshire Paleoindian" by Dr. Richard Boisvert; October 26.  

·        View Ongoing Archeological Excavations at Strawbery Banke Museum’s New Hampshire Fall Festival; Portsmouth, NH; October 9, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.  

·        Observe field work at the NH SCRAP/Oyster River Environs Archaeology Project Field School; Durham, NH; October 11-15, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  

·        Geophysical Investigations; Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site; Cornish, NH; October 12 -14, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.  

·        “Clues from the Past” talk by Ellen Marlatt of Independent Archaeological Consulting, LLC; American Independence Museum; Exeter, NH; October 13, 7 p.m.  

·        New Hampshire Archaeological Society, Project Archaeology and Strawbery Banke shared booth at the Archeology Fair; Boston Museum of Science; October 14, 9 a.m.–2 p.m. and October 16, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.  

·        New Hampshire Archaeological Society Meeting, White Mountain National Forest Office, Campton, NH; October 23, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.  

·        Project Archeology Information Booth; NH Council for the Social Studies 2010 Annual Conference; Manchester, NH; October 28, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.
