Historic Women Speak In Exeter in March

Abigail_AdamsTOP EVENTS

The American Independence Museum will observe Women’s History Month in March by exploring the lives of Colonial women in its series “Remember the Ladies” beginning March 14 at 7 p.m. at Folsom Tavern. Re-enactors will portray the lives of Paul Revere’s mother-in-law and the grandmother of Ralph Waldo Emerson. (Continued below)

Abigail Adams wrote the words “remember the ladies” to her husband John when he and others were crafting the Declaration of Independence.  A champion of education and property rights for women, her hope was that the civil rights and independence of women would be included in the document.  Women were not granted the right to vote until the 19th amendment was ratified in 1920.

On Wednesday, March 14, we will meet “Mrs. Rachel Walker”, mother-in-law of Paul Revere, and witness to the events leading up to the Revolutionary War.  Kate Carney, historian and actress, portrays Mrs. Walker as part of her Historical Theater Program.  Her performance will help audience members imagine what it was like to live in Boston before, during, and after the Revolution and will include an interactive demonstration of aggravating pre-Revolutionary taxes.

We will also meet Mrs. Phebe Emerson Ripley on March 28, as portrayed by Diann Strausberg of The Storied Past.  Mrs. Ripley witnessed the Revolutionary War’s dramatic beginnings from her home near the North Bridge in Concord, Massachusetts on April 19, 1775, and her husband was chaplain for the Continental Congress and local militia.  Reverend Emerson died just six months later while serving in Vermont.  Mrs. Ripley was also the grandmother of Ralph Waldo Emerson.

The events will begin at 7 p.m. at Folsom Tavern, located at 164 Water Street in Exeter.  Admission is $5 for adults, and $3 for students and museum members.  Certificates of Attendance will be available for educators and students.
