Halloween Parade Rock Fundraiser Oct 3

halloween_parade01MARK YOUR CALENDAR

Seems like everything’s twisted these days. Congress can’t stop poking pins in its Obama doll. Armies of kids are forsaking zombie and vampire Halloween costumes in favor of Smurfettes. But You can still rely on the annual Portsmouth Halloween Rock Show, now in its seventh year. So be there on Monday, Oct. 3 at The Coat of Arms at 7 p.m and support the parade. (Continued below)

A $5 donation will be requested at the door because New Hampshire’s biggest Halloween parade is brought to you by the people, for the people. The parade is not a city-sponsored event. It is staged by volunteers and funded solely by the community, primarily through grassroots events. The Rock Show rises again this year thanks to 106 Kitchen & Bar, Dos Amigos and The Wire.

Roster of Rockers:

Take a teaspoon of Elvis Costello, a half pint of Paul McCartney, a gallon of Joey Ramone and just a dash of Rick Nielsen and you'll have something resembling the likes of Kurt Baker. Baker’s drug of choice is power pop with a hefty helping of punk. He hits the rock show just prior to embarking on a tour of Europe.

Cal Powers doesn’t know how to walk away from rock’n’roll. One of The Founding Fathers of the local rock scene, he’s got 20 years of music under his guitar strap, yet the songs in his heart are forever 18. Powers and a non-committal road show of local talent he calls The Transient Temp Agency will be debuting songs from “Get a Room!” his first record in nearly 13 years. Careening from drunken irreverence to disarming innocence, the CD features guest appearances from 20 Seacoast area musicians plying punk-flavored, infectious rock.

Standing where the paths of altruism and rock’n’roll converge is Portsmouth’s Geoff Palmer, who will bring some blue-eyed, stripped-down, ‘60s pop rock to the line-up with his latest band, The Connection. His band has been on tour, racking up accolades for their new album, “New England's Newest Hit Makers.”

Rounding off the night’s line-up is the rarely-spotted,but never ignored Donkey Show. It includes Tim Theriault, who has been touring this year with Godsmack’s Sully Erna; Billy Butler, who is working on staging “Gay Bride of Frankenstein” off Broadway in February; and the mayor of the local music scene, Tim McCoy. One of the area’s best party bands, The Donkey Show is infamous for their covers of The Ramones, The Who, Jane's Addiction, and The Stones, among others.

So don’t let the kiddies dressed as Justin Bieber demanding fistfuls of fun-size Mr. Goodbars have all the fun. The Coat of Arms is located at 174 Fleet St. in Portsmouth. For more information go to spookyportsmouth.com, or friend the Portsmouth Halloween Parade on Facebook.

About the Portsmouth Halloween Parade

Marching into its 17th year, the Portsmouth Halloween Parade is a grassroots, all-inclusive Seacoast celebration of community, creativity, resourcefulness, and free expression, which walks, stalks, dances, trumpets and drums its way through downtown Portsmouth each year on October 31 at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to dress up, gather at Peirce Island by Prescott Park, and march. Hundreds march in costume, thousands cheer from the sidelines, it’s a spectacle from either side of the curb. What are you gonna be?
