On June 19 Thomas M. Hardiman, Keeper of the Portsmouth Athenaeum, will give a  lecture titled “A Field Guide to Portsmouth Chippendale Chair Patterns” for the Piscataqua Decorative Arts Society at the Tyco Center in Strawbery Banke Museum. The lecture starts at 5:30 sharp, preceded by refreshments at 5. The cost to the general public is $10.00, while members are free. (Continued below)

Mr. Hardiman will discuss how understanding the overall aspects of design and recognizing the individual cabinetmakers construction techniques are keys to identifying their work. The early Portsmouth cabinetmakers had served their customary apprenticeships before emigrateing to America, thus bringing skills and traditions with them. Mr. Hardiman will take a good look at the different elements, consisting of the crest rail, back splat, shapes of the legs, stretchers and seats that identify and make up the chair patterns.

Tom graduated from UNH in 1986 with his B.A. in English and a minor in History. He has been involved in restoration and preservation with Strawbery Banke Museum, the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, and he completed an architectural survey of Saco, ME. He has been curator of the York Institute Museum of Saco, where he was responsible for eleven exhibits. Tom has a variety of published works not only for the Magazine Antiques and the Piscataqua Decorative Arts Society, but also over fifty featured articles in other publication. As of 2000 Tom has been Keeper of the Portsmouth Athenaeum where as Executive Director he is responsible for all aspects of the rare book library.
