A lot of people come to this office and tell me about their dream projects. It’s their risk. I love brainstorming out a business plan for an artistic venture. But I tend to be pretty pessimistic – seen that, been there, don’t waste your money. But now and then I sit up and say – “You know what? This one has wings. It really could fly.” So it was with Marianne Pernold-Young’s latest venture. She’s always had the talent – a great photographic eye. She’s always had the energy. Now she has a clever concept that she has taken to press. Her new photo guide to an unseen strata of Portsmouth is about to hit the shops and a better holiday gift you will not find. (Continued below)

Portsmouth Looking Up! is based on the concept that we rarely see what’s above our heads. Objects we pass hundreds of times go unnoticed. Marianne has turned that truism into what she calls a photographic scavenger hunt. Here’s how it works.

You buy the book. That goes without saying. Then you stand in Market Square and turn to the first photo. Where was it taken? Need a clue? Read the brief text. Still stuck? Move on. Repeat process. Of course you can cheat. There is a map and a key at the back of the book.

You can also play at home. My wife and I know the city very well, so we sat with Marianne in our back yard and guessed our way through an early design version of Portsmouth Looking Up!  My wife got about 75% of the photos right. I got the other 25%, proving that nearsighted people are at a definite disadvantage. The thrill for me was seeing in crisp photo close-ups what my eyes could never know in real life.

I predict that this will become one of those gift items that companies love to present to new clients. And for those of us who have dozens of Portsmouth books, this one is wholly unique. All I have so far is the cover art – posted above. Look for it in stores downtown. Ask for it by name.

Here’s your chance to wander around in a whole new Portsmouth. Have fun. Try not cheat – and watch out for oncoming traffic. – JDR
