Celebrating John Greenleaf Whittier in Newburyport

POrtrait of a young JG Whittier in AmesburyMARK YOUR CALENDAR

The Whittier Home Museum is proud to announce the second annual Celebrating John Greenleaf Whittier fundraiser, on Sunday, June 26, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Maudslay Arts Center, in the magnificent Maudslay State Park in Newburyport. Read all about it below.

Whittier was one of the most influential 19th century American poets and an ardent and outspoken abolitionist, humanitarian and legislator. Join us as we honor his lifetime in the pursuit of social justice, artistic expression and the sharing of his love and appreciation of the beauty of the natural world around him.

The gathering with friends is something he did annually on the banks of the Merrimac River to celebrate the blooming of the laurels, often referred to as the Feast of Flowers. Here they “partook” of good food, poetry, music and conversation good friendship. Greenleaf captured the essence of experience in his poem praising the natural beauty abounding at Maudslay on the banks of the Merrimac

“And these green paths must soon be trod

By other feet thank ours,

Full long may annual pilgrims come

To keep the Feast of Flowers”

June on the Merrimac by JG Whittier

In commemoration of this outstanding poet, award -winning poet Rhina P. Espaillat, will present a reading of her own original poem “Overheard: William Lloyd Garrison and John Greenleaf Whittier,” inspired by Whittier’s life.

Throughout the festivities guests will enjoy the enchanting music of classical guitarist, John Tavano, playing a mix of original compositions and Romantic pieces while enjoying a scrumptious summer buffet. Celebrating Whittier tickets are $25 if purchased by June 20 and $30 after June 20.
