(Continued below)

Back in Portsmouth for a second year as the Calandra Trio, the Pacific Symphony’s flutist Ben Smolen and violist Meredith Crawford, and outstanding Boston-area harpist Maria Rindenello-Parker offer another sampling of the varied and beautiful music composed for this unusual instrumental ensemble.

Their program will include Debussy’s haunting “Prelude a l’apres-midi d’un faune” and Beethoven’s Serenade for Violin, Viola and Flute, both arranged for flute viola and harp. They will also present Ravel’s renowned “Sonatine en Trio for Flute, Viola & Harp,” Arthur Foote’s moving “At Dusk” and the adventurous “Zodiac Trio” by contemporary composer, William Mathias.

“Calandra Trio, a flute, harp and viola ensemble, presents a rare opportunity to hear a different set of music composed for this unique grouping of instruments,” noted Bill Wieting, Chairman of the Portsmouth Athenaeum Performance Committee. “The Historic Portsmouth Chamber Music series is pleased to have the chance to offer this performance in the Little Harbor Chapel, which promises to be a lovely setting.”

The final concert in the Historic Portsmouth Chamber Music series featuring The Trio Cleonice, comprised of violin, cello and piano, will be held on October 27 at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 3:00 pm.
