A Race of Shipbuilders, the Hanscom Family by Richard E Winslow IIIIn this riveting work, maritime historian Richard E. Winslow III, a librarian at Portsmouth Public Library, gives a rich and vivid account of one family’s unique American experience. He carefully intertwines a family biography into a dynamic historical overview of shipbuilding on the Piscataqua. The Hanscoms were a family with shipbuilding in their genes as each generation left its own unique mark on their trade. Generations of Hanscoms, from the earliest to arrive in the mid-1650s well into the 20th Century, showed a remarkable ability to adapt their craft to the rapidly changing science and technology of modern shipbuilding. This flexibility kept the Hanscom family central to shipbuilding for over two hundred years.

Richard E. Winslow III has dedicated over forty-five years of research, writing, and publishing to New England ships. This biographical survey of the seafaring Hanscom family of Eliot, Maine, is his sixth book published by the Society. And he shares with that illustrious family a lifelong interest in all things maritime. On August 19, 2013 Richard E. Winslow III was recognized for years of chronicling Portsmouth’s maritime history and received a proclamation from the mayor and city council on the official Dick Winslow Day.

The original Portsmouth Marine Society was chartered in 1808 as an organization of ship captains, officers, and owners who shared navigational and business information about domestic and foreign ports and provided some benefits to the families of members lost at sea.

Today it is the publishing arm of the Portsmouth Historical Society and has published 33 titles. Topics range from Prescott Park, embroidery samplers, archaeology, Tobias Lear, and the Treaty of Portsmouth. But nowhere else can a reader find as much information about Portsmouth’s naval shipyard, submarines, Piscataqua-built sailing ships, tugboats, lighthouses, privateers, whaling, and maritime Portsmouth.
