KUDOS TO KEN MITCHELL
As his swan song approaches, I wanted to extend a thank you to Ken Mitchell for his weather forecasting and insights over the years.  I was a fan when he had his own site and migrated to seacoastnh.com when he began posting here exclusively.  Reading Ken's forecast and almanac have been a fixture in my daily routine and I hope that he enjoys the rest that not waking up to examine all of those computer models will afford him in the months and  years to come.
Jim Costello

KEN REPLIES: Thanks, Jim.  I truly appreciate your support.  It is for people like you that I have been doing this so long.  I plan to still be giving you my tale on major weather events, or even minor ones, but at a more reasonable hour and with a less hectic pace.  I still have not yet recovered from this mini-pneumonia, and am still dragging...so I even more believe my decision to cycle back is a good one.  The way I envision my future role is that you will get the normal forecast, and then if there is something unusual weather-wise, or major, I will chirp in and discuss it from my viewpoint.  I hope this new format makes my contributions even more valuable, actually, as I will be spending my time focusing on the important stuff.  So thanks again, but it is not farewell...just a mid-life change.   :

MAD ABOUT HOMING PIGEONS
To SeacoastNH.com: I am copying two emails that I have sent the Town of Seabrook (my residence) regarding homing pigeons in my neighborhood that are a big nuscience and becoming a real problem with my fence and backyard.. To date, I haven't received a reply or an acknowledgement and I'm pretty upset about it.  I would love to know if others are having the same issue and would love to see these emails printed.  Maybe then, something might be done about it.I truly hope you could publish these emails, and if you have any suggestions of what I can do, I would love to hear it.

1st email: To Whom It May Concern:

I have a real issue with pigeons on my property.  Someone in this area has homing pigeons.  I put a complaint in last year, and received no results.  This year it has become even more of a problem on our propertyl  We have a brown post and rail fence around our property.  It has become increasingly disgusting with pigeon droppings.  Last year my parents had a stone walkway put in our back yard.  The stones are becoming covered with droppings from these pigeons that are continuously in our back yard.  Now too, the droppings are on the roof of our sheds.  I am thoroughly sick to my stomach regarding this issue.  I spent two hours yesterday with a scrub brush cleaning the fence around our property.

These pigeons love to come and sit on the wires that are above the fence.  They fly around and the droppings are on our driveway, any cars that park towards the end of the driveway.  This is a real nuisance.  If I wanted to have pigeons around, I would live in the city.

I enjoy living in the town of Seabrook, and my husband and I take pride in our yard.  But this issue with the birds is getting worse and I want to know what the town can do to get rid of this problem.  I see these pigeons when I take walks and they're on the front lawn of neightbors yards feeding off the ground of the bird feeders, I am even seeing the droppings now on the street.  This is truly disgusting...

I look foward to hearing from someone regarding this issue.  I am truly at my wit's end with these disgusting pigeons that carry disease.  I also have a dog that stays in the back yard, and I really don't want to see my dog getting sick from these disgusting creatures.

Like I said, if I lived in the city, I would expect this, but I don't, and I am sick and tired of the mess these birds are making in our yard.

2nd email: -- To Whom It May Concern:
I sent an email regarding this problem with pigeons in my yard back on July 1st and I have since to receive a response.  Am I going to get one?  Do I need to carry this issue further to another department, if so, please let me know who I need to contact?

I would really appreciate hearing from someone.  One of these pigeons was found dead under the wires in my front lawn, and there was a tag on it's leg, so I know they are homing pigeons.  This issue is not going to go away until the pigeons do. Would really appreciate an answer.

WENTWORTH PHOTOS
I have several photographers' pictures of The Wentworth from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. I'd be happy to send copies to Mr. Robinson. Please tell me how. I recently ordered his Wentworth book and am enjoying it, while reliving memories of summers spent there...

EDITOR’S REPLY: We’d love to see these images included in the Smith Collection at the Portsmouth Athenaeum that relates to the history of Wentworth by the Sea.

SWEDE MOMSEN MOVIE ABOUT SQUALUS
I admired a documentary on SBS here in Australia on the sinking and rescue of submarine USS Squalus in May 1939 by naval engineer 'Swede' Momsen with his clever diving bell. I wonder if there is some way to get this movie to Australia so I can see it. George Paris

EDITOR’S REPLY: Sorry, this film, to our knowledge, has never been released in any form to the public. It continues to show on TV, apparently, all around the world.

MORE CASWELLS
I really enjoy your articles and am decended from the Isles of Shoals Caswells. I am hoping you can help me with me research. When did the Caswells first arrive on Star Island and from where? My reseach has Robert Kearswell appear in 1690 but I have no specifics. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

FOUR TREE ISLAND
I find 4 tree island fascinating site. Do you have any info as to where the name came from, and, in relation to it, where was the site of the big bang,i.e.,Henderson Point ??? Thanks. RM
Roy Marshall

EDITOR’S REPLY: Four Tree Island would have been a good vantage point to view the biggest explosion in US history back in 1905. Henderson’s Point, blown to bits by the explosion, was just down river from there on the Kittery side, not far from where the Portsmouth Naval Prison is today.

DESCENDED FROM GOODY COLE
I am a relative of Goody (Eunice) Cole - my grandmother, Eva Batchelder, wife of Oscar Batchelder, was a Shaw and told me that that Eunice was a great great aunt, and witch, that she was finally buried in the town of Hampton (Cole Family). I do have a furniture piece of the Cole family, and a family album my Grandmother did give me, 40+ years ago.

I do have the original Batchelder cradle (used in 1900) for my Grandfather, and a few other piecies from their home (being the favorite Grandaugther!).I have a huge interest in Herbal Magic practices, which I feel, relate to Goody. I have been reviewing web sites regarding Eunice, and I am amazed at how many, will not "open". I believe she still walks.
Cynthia Whitcomb (Mead, Batchelder, )

EDITOR’S REPLY: Thanks for your great email to the editor. Our Goody Cole page is linked above. Goody Cole was "accused" of being a witch in an era filled with fear and superstition. She was not a witch, since they don't exist. The accusation was simply a way for more powerful people in town to exploit Cole and take her land and property. She likely died of natural causes and the site of her burial is unknown. The town of Hampton later apologized for wrongly accusing her of being a witch in a ceremony in the 20th century. Since she did not practice witchcraft, but was wrongly accused, there is no connection between Goody Cole and the "helaing arts". The town has since used her name as a means to draw tourists to the region. The best infromation about her is on the Hampton Library web site.

IDENTIFYING PHOTOS IS DIFFICULT
Enjoy your columns and especially like your addition to the NH Gazette. I have a professional photo that was taken circa 1945-46 of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Portsmouth NH. This was during a time when the VFW played a very big role in Portsmouths' history as most of the men were in the Pacific and patiotism was at an all time high. I am trying to identify all the ladies and I wondered if you would consider using it as an article.

I also remember in 1947/48 when Harry Truman was campaigning for the Presidency, there was a Portsmouth Herald front page photo of him walking down Congress Street when a milkman yelled out to him " Give'em hell Harry!".. When one considers Truman's approval rating was at 27% and his own party was attempting to have him resign and appoint a "RE{PUBLICAN" to relace him,( to ensure a continuity of government in such volitile times... The Lonliest Campaign 1963)...old George W. Bush's dilemma is not unique.
Nan Milani

EDITOR’S REPLY: We’d be happy to post the photo online and circulate it among our readers, but don’t hold your breath. Best bet is to scan the photo and indicate which persons in the photo have already been identified. We really should create a section for this kind of thing, but wouldn eed to find sponsors first. Maybe a photo shop?

CHURCH AND SLAVES
I appreciated Valerie Cunningham's treatise on "The Church and Portsmouth Slaves." I'm researching the seventh day Sabbath in early America and wonder if you have any information on whether black churches ever observed the seventh day Sabbath -- were there any Seventh Day Baptist churches attended by the black community, or pastored by black ministers?

LOOKING FOR OLD PHOTOS
Hello Mr. Robinson. My husband and I enjoy all your work in the Portsmouth Herald often. Ironically, our name is ROBINSON also!!

I was born in Portsmouth, growing up in the South End and graduating at PHS in 1949. My hubby was born in NJ, but lived in Exeter when we met. We lived in Elwyn Park until 1960 when we moved to Southern California for 43 years. He was a policeman in Anaheim where we made our home for several years out there.

Anyway, a little background---my grandfather, WILLIAM H. APPLETON was a fireman when I was young. He lived on Rogers St. in Portsmouth. He always was the person who built and lit the bonfires at the So. Mill Pond for years. I did see a photo of him leading parade with the flag many yrs. ago but never any to do with the bonfires, etc.

We are wondering, since you are such a historian, do you have any photos or history of those days we might view or see in the newspaper sometime? We now reside in Newington, surrounded by most of our family, enjoying the 4 seasons again and many old friends. Of course, we are both retired. We appreciate your time on this matter and look forward to your reply. The old time photos you publish are priceless, keep up the good work!! I used to write a weekly newspaper column, myself, in Orange County, Ca. for several years. Sincerely yours,
Martha and Bruce F. Robinson

EDITOR’S REPLY: Thanks for your great letter. Still not quite sure what type of pix you are looking for or what era. The images in the Herald come from the Strawbery Banke Collection and are largely 19th century pictures. Sadly, local newspapers have not kept up their photo files, so we actually have more old images than those from the 20th century. By relying on microfilm, many local newspapers have given away or abandoned their photo archives. So instead of crisp photos, we have only muddy images reproduced from dot-screened newspapers. Apparently no one has figured this out yet, but soon the story will come to the surface. Local historical societies often do not collect newer photos either, so gathering these lost images will be a Herculean task. For 20th century fire photos, I’d check with the separate fire departments. They may be the best source.
