The Port of Portsmouth Maritime Museum Association is pleased to announce an event which will occur on Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 10am until 3 pm. The submarine museum is planning Submarine History Day with a celebration of the life of local hero and medal of honor recipient, Richard O’Kane. This famous submarine commander was born in Dover, NH and grew up in Durham. We plan to honor  the late Rear Admiral with a presentation and video about his life.

The park will also have an amateur radio demonstration; a performance at  1 pm by Great Bay Sailors, trivia hunts and coloring books for children; Active submarine sailors from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and former Albacore crew members will be on hand to explain submarine duty. 

We also plan to have representatives from the Wright World War II Museum in Wolfeboro; Subvets from Thresher base and Marblehead, Ma.  There will be a tolling of the lost boats at Noon. 

The local International Submarine Race team  with be here and plan to Christen their submarine at  10 am.  Author , Linda  Petrat will be signing, A Great Big Adventure on a Good Little Boat at 12:30. Children can try our  toy submarines in our test tank and adults can win historic ship models with our raffles.  Moe’s submarine sandwiches will be available and all parking is free.

The usual Submarine tour admission will be charged but all outside activities including the performance by Great Bay sailors will be free. For additional information please call (603)436-3680
