South Berwick Garden Tour June 21

Benjamin Chadbourne houseMARK YOUR CALENDAR

On Saturday, June 21, 2014the Old Berwick Historical Society will present "Circle the Pond," a house and garden tour featuring seven private homes in South Berwick, Maine. The homes (circa 1700-1985) feature various periods and styles, including unique architectural designs. (Click title for full article)

The tour was organized by Ginny Smith Alterio, an OBHS Board member. A descendent of the Chadbourne’s, Virginia “Ginny" Smith Alterio & husband Marc have made every effort to retain and enhance the original charm of the Judge Chadbourne House at the corner of Liberty and Vine Streets.

Built in 1770, the house is arguably one of the most elegant on the tour. Impeccable landscaping is part of its cachet, courtesy of Marc's boundless enthusiasm for garden design.“My mother and several OBHS board members planned and presented the first OBHS house tour,” said Alterio.

“We have shown the house in every OBHS house tour over the last 40 years, and it is a tradition we are proud to participate in again this year.”  The tour includes the entire main house and the newly renovated Jefferson A. Smith Store House barn room located in the carriage house. Marc's gardens, featured in Better Homes & Gardens magazine and on the Victory Garden, will also be open for guests to explore.

Also on the tour this year is theGoodwin House at 1 Old Fields Road. Originally built in 1740, it was rebuilt in 1794, after a fire. It remained in the Goodwin family until 1958. The Goodwins are one of the venerable "first families" of South Berwick. Current owners, Harvey and Paula Bennett, have generously offered 4 rooms of this lovely home for tour-goers to appreciate, as well as the gardens. OBHS is hosting an archeology field school there this summer, for the 3rdyear in a row. Some items from the dig will be on display.

The day will begin at the Counting House Museum, 2 Liberty Street, South Berwick, Maine where attendees will pick up tickets for $30 each, and tour details. For tickets call207-384-4039or purchase tickets on line atwww.oldberwick.org
