PORTSMOUTH -- owner and editor J. Dennis Robinson recently received a National Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Robinson received the Ellen Hardin Walworth medal for patriotism at Portsmouth, NH in November. Walworth, for whom the medal is named, was a 19th century author, educator and one of the founders of the DAR.

The medal was awarded by the DAR Ranger Chapter at the Wentworth-Coolidge Center, once owned by NH royal governor Benning Wentworth before the American Revolution.

DARThe award, according to an accompanying certificate, is presented to an American "who has displayed outstanding patriotism in the promotion of the American ideals of God, Home and Country." It was presented by Tylene Jousse and Bea Dalton of the Ranger Chapter and signed by DAR president general Linda Tinker Watkins during a gathering of two dozen DAR members.

The medal, according to Jousse, was presented specifically for Robinson’s continued reporting on New Hampshire history in books, magazines, newspapers, in lectures and on the popular web site

"I’m especially pleased," Robinson said after the presentation, "that the definition of patriotism here includes my work that is sometimes laudatory, but sometimes critical of traditional views of American history. My mission has been to examine our rich local heritage from diverse views that also include the history of women, children, immigrant populations, Native Americans and people of color. The more who know about our complex past, the more we understand what it means to be American."

Robinson has published approximately 1,000 articles, largely on history and culture in the Piscataqua region. His writing appears daily on and regularly in the NH Gazette, the Portsmouth Herald and Accent Magazine. His latest book is a best-selling history of Wentworth by the Sea hotel. His next book, a profile of an immigrant Italian mill family, Rich With Children, was written with Lynne Vachon and is due early in 2005. He is currently working on a collection of short biographies of unique New Hampshire men and women.

The National Society of the DAR was organized in "Washington City" October 11, 1890. The first NH chapter was organized two years later in Manchester. There are currently 20 New Hampshire chapters across the state.
