Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #87
No, not a lost portrait of President Lincoln. This is Portsmouth photographer Lafayette V. Newell (1833 – 1914) whose images fill this column. A twin among 13 children, Newell moved from Barnstead to Concord as a handwriting expert, but took up the new business of photography. He settled here as a grocery store operator, but returned to photography by the time of this 1880s self-portrait.
