G. B. Chadwick & Company

Yesterday, circa 1906, G. B. Chadwick & Company was located at 11 Bow Street. In their advertisement, they stated they were "the leading machinists and electrical contractors of Portsmouth, and numbered among the foremost similar firms of New England ... with spacious machine and repair shops. Electrical contract work of every description is executed and machines, automobile and steamboat repair work made a specialty. Modern methods, thorough workmanship and guaranteed results mark all transactions."

Today, the streetscape (where G. B. Chadwick was) has been completely changed. As is often the case, when researching urban geography of many years ago, finding the location of buildings is hampered by numerous factors. In this case, the entire block has been changed. Today the streets that border the area are Bow, Chapel, Daniel and Penhallow; yesterday the streets were Bow, Chapel, Daniel, and Lenden (which started at Daniel Street and became Jaffreys Street at its Bow Street end).. The block now contains our Federal Building and parking lot instead of multiple wooden and brick buildings. To make identification more difficult, in 1910 the City changed the street numbering system so that No. 11 Bow Street became No. 32. We think that G. B. Chadwick was on the corner of Bow Street and the entrance to the driveway into the Federal Building's parking lot.
