68 State Street
Yesterday, circa 1906, No. 68 State Street was the home of J. E. Hoxie, painter and decorator. His advertisement read, in part, "Famous as Portsmouth is for its picturesque harbor, historic houses, and various other points of interest, it has still other claims of distinction, and among the most notable of these is the house painting and decorative concerns of J. E. Hoxie. It is the largest business house of its kind east of Boston, and decidedly unsurpassed in the character, reliability and general excellence of work ...". J. E, Hoxie was established in 1895.
Today, the numbers have changed on State Street. The new number 68 is the home of The Framing Alternative owned by Elly and Mark Harrison. They offer fine custom framing, custom framed mirrors, ready-made frames, limited edition prints, customer shadow boxes, and are specialists in needlework framing.
