If you travel Route 4 from Newington to Durham you’ve seen the tiny wagon on the hill. If you haven’t turned up the dirt drive, you are missing the best view. Park free and walk through the historic Durham family farm. IN all seasons Wagon Hill offers a perfect hour-long stroll.

Name: Wagon Hill Farm Durham residents don’t want us to mess up this beautiful spot and rules are heavily posted on large green saying what we can and cannot do. The hiker feels that the woods may be filled with guards and spy cameras watching which tends to keep us on the trail and looking straight ahead. A visit to Wagon Hill is worth the dangerous sharp turn off the busy highway to get here. There are three walking areas – one along the bay, one through the woods and another through the fields. History buffs will find the family cemetery plot down near the swimming area (no lifeguard). Rural views of this 130-acre farm are sweeping and pastoral. -- JDR CONTINUE WAGON HILL FARM photosl

Rules: Lots of rules all posted. Dawn to dusk, four seasons, stay off environmentally weak shoreline area, no alcohol, no running, no vehicles, stay on paths .
Parking: Yes, small lot and overflow area usually with porto-toilet there. .
Dogs: Must be on leash at all times to avoid stiff fines.
Tips: Bring bug repellent in summer and spring. Best views in fall, sledding in winter.
Directions: Requires careful turning onto a dirt driveway off the buys Route 4 highway Left turn after crossing bridge coming from Newington, Right turn coming from Durham across from Eliot Farm.

The wooden wagon at the top of the hill has been there since this was a family farm. The town of Durham paid a huge fee of over $3 million to save this farm from development and has generously turned it over to the public. We always parked near the preserved farmhouse and walked directly over to the wagon above Route 4 and then around to the wooded area in the back. Now it is possible to follow a wide dirt road through the old farm fields and down to developed waterfront picnic area with tables on Little Bay. This is possibly the most beautiful, well-kept preserved farm and trail in the Seacoast. Only the Ludholm salr marsh farm in Wells, Maine on the ocean can hold a candle to it.
