Things certainly have changed in downtown Dover. In the 18th century this was a bustling port in which up to 100 ships a year sailed to the Pisctagua and to Europe. The waterfront continued its decline through much of the 20th century, but the city of Dover has, at last, turned the tide on the Cochecho River. It’s back, and makes an attractive walk in the middle of one of the Seacoast’s busiest cities.

Henry Law Park, according to the city guide, is one of Dover's oldest and most intensively used recreation facilities. She short walk, just 1,200 feet of river frontage, begins just off Central Avenue with the outdoor entertainment amphitheater. The river walkway is just beyond the brick Butterfield Gym, with its basketball court, weight room, indoor pool, a tot lot and wading pool.

Dover "gets it" more than most local cities. Planners understand that the town is full of families with kids who are constantly looking for things to do. But the river walk is also a serene area where nearby elderly residents can simply watch the winding river. Just beyond the scenic mill view is a state-of-the art skate park for kids, and beyond that a covered bridge spans the river and sends walkers back to the starting point. A wide range of great restaurants, antique shops, and stores are nearby. The park is within walking distance to the local library, city hall and the historic Strand movie theatre. Henry Law Park is the site of a summer arts concert program and the fall Apple Harvest festival, among other events. -- JDR
