On Saturday, October 1, from 10 am to 2 pm the Warner House Association and the Wentworth Coolidge Mansion will host a special tour focusing on the life of Benning Wentworth in each of these houses. Benning was the governor responsible for distributing much of the land in colonial New Hampshire and Vermont, (Continued below)

Yet Benning had surprisingly little interest in buying and selling Portsmouth real estate.  During his early career in Portsmouth, he rented a house on Daniel Street from his sister, widow of Archibald Macphaedris, who lived in the Warner House.

When he was appointed New Hampshire’s first Royal Governor, Benning Wentworth rented the Warner House from his sister and lived there for the next 17 years, making it the first “governor’s palace” of Portsmouth. He repeatedly tried to get the New Hampshire legislature to buy the house and to make improvements, but all requests were denied.

Finally, he moved to a farm that belonged to his son John that became the Wentworth Coolidge mansion and our second “governor’s palace.” The tour at the Warner House, 150 Daniel St Portsmouth, at 10 am and will be led by Sandra Rux. The program continues at the Wentworth-Coolidge Mansion on Little Harbor Rd with a light lunch and a talk and tour led by Russell Bastedo, Curator Emeritus of the State of New Hampshire. Cost is $15 per person, including lunch; reservations are required. Please call Sandra Rux 603 436-8420 for reservations and more information.
