SPECIAL UPDATE:

Due to an overwhelming response the Portsmouth Underbelly Tour, has extended it’s season to September 29. (Note: There will be no tour on Saturday, Sept. 15.)  The adults-only tour is stand-up history at its best as costumed characters take you back into a history that the city would like to forget. The Portsmouth Underbelly is performed every Monday and Saturday evening at 6pm on the corner of State and Pleasant streets (The Rusty Hammer) in Portsmouth. Tour is $10. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by calling (978) 683-7745. Guests should arrive roughly fifteen minutes early.

This walking tour chronicles the underbelly of the city that is known for its quant New England charm. The tour tells the stories that are most often swept under the rug. Accused spy Silas Deane and tavern Wench Olive Cutter are your guides and will spin their yarns in sometimes scandalous manner. This tour is truly hands-on.

Portsmouth Underbelly is performed by George Hosker-Bouley and Sarah Shanahan. George is the former artistic and executive director of the Prescott Park Arts Festival and an award-winning playwright who has won numerous “Spotlight on the Arts Awards” for his work. His latest play “Parlor Games” was performed to standing room only audiences and his play “A Civil Tongue” was nominated locally for Best Play of 2011. Sarah Shanahan, new to the tour this year, is known for her broad portrayals of women. Sarah is also the winner and multiple Spotlight-nominee for Best Actress in a Musical. She has performed throughout the Seacoast and beyond.

The tour tracks familiar Portsmouth characters including John Paul Jones, Celia Thaxter, John Langdon, and Paul Revere. These alternative stories reveal information not covered in most text books – and it’s all true.

Tour tickets are $10. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by calling (978) 683-7745. Guests should arrive 15 minutes before showtimes.
