While large churches with Tiffany windows are located in cities such as Manchester and Augusta, Mr. Probert feels the more interesting studies are along the coastal areas of Maine and New Hampshire. This region is the home of summer churches that were constructed not only by the year round inhabitants, but by the seasonal visitors. These churches were miniature versions of their larger urban counterparts in Philadelphia and New York, where seasonal residents wintered and worked. Mr. Probert will address the connoisseurship of the windows as in their makers and the designers. He will talk about the cultural context of these treasures and the fashionable members of the largely summer society that brought this culture with them on vacation. Louis Comfort Tiffany referred to this culture as “The Gospel of Good Taste.”

Josh Probert received his B.A. in 2001 from Brigham Young University, and an M.A. in Public Administration from the same. He has a second M.A. from Yale University Divinity School. At present he is a PhD candidate in the History of American Civilization at the University of Delaware/Winterhur Museum, His dissertation thesis, “Gilded Religion in the Age of Tiffany, 1877-1932” focuses on church organs, furniture and windows. In addition to his studies he adds a very long list of awards, publications, lectures, museum experience and teaching.

The Piscataqua Decorative Arts Society is a non-profit organization with a mission to promote original historical research resulting in publication. The Tyco Center is at 14 Hancock Street, Portsmouth, N.H. For more information, www.pdasociety.org
